“How was your weekend?”
“Fine; just stayed in and relaxed.”
This tends to be the normal conversation on Monday morning for most people. Nothing wrong with it, per se… just seems to be a little boring.
Are you aware that in an average 75 year lifespan, there are only 3,900 weekends? Maybe that seems like a lot… maybe you think, “I have plenty of those left to enjoy.” But when I think through the fact that I’m 40 years old, that means that I’ve used around 2,100 of those weekends already!
What did I do with them? Given – sometimes I used them for an exciting trip or a memorable family outing. But on a consistent basis, I’m not sure that I’ve used them well. I’m sure that I used some to binge watch or to get extra rest (some necessary, and some unnecessary). I’m sure that I’ve dwindled away opportunities to spend with the ones I love or to create masterpieces of art or music. I’ve definitely avoided tackling important tasks or responsibilities that needed my attention.
All of that to say, I’ve wasted many of my weekends.
But I can honestly say that while I haven’t mastered the idea, I’m learning this lesson very well. Every few months, my wife and I take a weekend to travel across the country and spend a weekend with mentors, coaches, entrepreneurs, and overall awesome people at a leadership conference. We make sure that once every other month or so, my wife and I getaway on a weekend date. I am attempting to get better at spending some weekends with family members and even taking the trip across the state to visit with good ‘old friends from years gone by.
I want to make sure that I utilize my weekends – yes, sometimes for resting, but not all the time. Experiences are what we’ll remember the most and what we will regret if we don’t have enough to remember.
Just a thought…
